Ph.D. Student Amol Khedkar works on automatic steering systems with his professor

UMKC SCE doctoral student, Amol Khedkar, is working with Professor Vijay Kumar on a prototype of a “self-synchronizing moving objects” system that enables cars to share road intersections with no driver input.   Amol is also investigating how to extend the scheme to work in three-dimensional spaces for synchronizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).   In 2001, Amol completed his master’s degree in computer science at Amravati University, India and started working in the United States in 2006 as a software professional.  As soon as he was financially able, he joined UMKC SCE as a part-time doctoral student.  “The project self synchronization of moving object was my dream project. When Dr. Kumar discussed this project with me, it was like this is what I wanted to do.” Several local media outlets have featured articles on the research Amol Khedkar is contributing toward including the July 19, 2010 Kansas City Star  and the July 21, 2010 Wednesday Sun  .  The project is being conducted under a fellowship program at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y.

Professor Jerry Richardson earns NHI’s 2009 Instructor of Excellence Award

Dr. Jerry Richardson, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at UMKC’s School of Computing and Engineering, has been recognized as a 2009 Instructor of Excellence by the the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Institute (NHI) .  The award reflects the high quality or instruction the 156 participants in Dr. Richardson’s NHI training classes on bridge scour and stream stability indicated they received.  Dr. Richardson’s consistent “excellence in training administration and instructor competence” meritied  the NHI’s recognition of his exemplary service.  Criteria for this award includes:

  • achieving consistently an instructor satisfaction ranking of 4.5 average or above
  • nomination by the Training Program Manager and Instructor Advisory Committee
  • having achieved or in the process of achieving NHI Certification; and
  • attending and passing the NHI Instructor Development Course (IDC).

We congratulate Dr. Jerry Richardson on his success and selection for this award.

Jerry Richardson presents at Society of American Military Engineers Chapter Meeting

Civil Engineering Professor Jerry Richardson is the featured presenter at the July Society of American Military Engineers meeting.  On July 29, 2010 he will present on The Effect of Data Density on Advanced Hydraulic Computations. This presentation was part of the XVIII International Conference on Computational Methods and Water Resources held recently in Barcelona, Spain.  Dr. Richardson is a faculty member in the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering. He co-authored sections in Hec-18 and also teaches NHI courses on bridge scour and stream stability.

KCUR Up to Date will feature Vijay Kumar’s research on Aug. 5th

KCUR Up to Date program, hosted by Steve Kraske, has invited Vijay Kumar to talk about his U.S. Air Force research which could produce vehicles with minds of their own if Professor Vijay Kumar’s project goes as planned.  Professor Vijay Kumar is designing and developing a prototype of a “self-synchronizing moving objects” system under the summer fellowship program at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Rome, N.Y.  An automatic system would guide cars on their way, leaving the “driver” free to text, shave or even nap! An automatic system would guide cars on their way, leaving the “driver” free to text, shave or even nap! Such a system could be used for national defense purposes, as well.This summer,  Professor Vijay Kumar is designing and developing a prototype of a “self-synchronizing moving objects” system under the summer fellowship program at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Rome, N.Y.
