Dr. Cory Beard Garners “Outstanding Doctoral Faculty Member” Award


Dr. Cory Beard has been selected as this year’s “Outstanding Doctoral Faculty Member”.  UMKC Interdisciplinary Doctoral students nominate IPhD faculty members for this award.   All of SCE congratulates Dr. Beard; we know this honor is well earned!

UMKC and SCE Honors Steve Edwards, Chairman & CEO of Black & Veatch

SCE is honored to recognize Steve Edwards (B.S.E.E. ’78), Chairman and CEO of Black & Veatch as our 2015 UMKC SCE Alumni Achievement Award recipient.  He is just the seventh person to lead the company since its inception in 1915 and  is a member of the SCE Executive Advisory Council.  Through his support, the Black & Veatch Scholarship was established and his company regularly recruits SCE students and partners with UMKC for continuing education classes at Black & Veatch’s world headquarters. Each year, the UMKC Alumni Association Governing Board and the campus recognize outstanding individual alumni, and one family, with top honors, celebrating their achievements and service at the April 23  luncheon event. E-Week 2015 Promotes Service, Community and Fun

Highlights from this year’s E-week activities (Feb. 23-27) demonstrate SCE student involvement with our professional engineering communities and with our local Kansas City community.  On Monday, an all school blood drive in room 557 Flarsheim Hall kicked off our E-week festivities with 46 donors answering the call by the end of the day.  Wednesday the STEM Career Fair featuring over 30 employers, was held in the Student Union.  Excited students dressed in business suits returned with smiles and business cards.

UMKC Robotics Team Takes Second Place at Regional Competition

The UMKC Robotics Team recently attended the IEEE Region 5 Robotics Competition, where they placed 2nd among the 23 teams in attendance.  UMKC entered five robots in the 2015 competition held April 18, 2015.

This is UMKC’s 11th consecutive year to send a team to the competition.  The event was held concurrently with the IEEE Region 5 Business Meeting and Conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in New Orleans, LA.  In 2016, the conference and competition will be held in Kansas City, MO.

Dr. Praveen Rao Accepts Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program

Congratulations to Professor Praveen Rao, Associate Professor of Computer Science!  Dr. Rao has accepted an appointment as a fellow in the 2015 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program.   He will be conducting research on developing scalable methods for Big Data analytics.   The program is administered by the Air Force Office of Sponsored Research (AFOSR) and is located at AFRL – Griffiiss Business and Technology Park.

SCE hosts CANSec Workshop, 2 Students Receive Best Poster Award

Drs. Baek-Young Choi and Deep Medhi, professors of Computer Science Electrical Engineering at the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering, recently hosted the 7th Central Area Networking and Security Workshop (CANSec),on Saturday, March 28th at the Student Union on UMKC campus. Two SCE graduate students, Kaustubh Dhondge and Hyungbae Park, received the Best Poster Award in this event.
