2017

Dr. John Kevern’s proposal entitled “Evaluation of Penetrating Sealers Applied to Saw Cut Faces in Concrete Pavement Joints” has been approved for funding by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation policy research program. UMKC will generate more than $62,000 in revenue from the project to support graduate students and Dr. Kevern over its 2-year duration.

Dr. Deep Medhi was awarded $16,000 to support two undergraduate students on his project, “SRN: On Establishing Secure and Resilient Networking Services.” The total NSF support for this project is now $216,000.

ECE PhD students Emeshaw Ashenafi and Abdul Hamid Yusuf have received the 2017 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Travel Grant. Each will receive a grant of $1160 to attend the society’s annual flagship event, The International Symposium on Circuits and Systems.

Dr. Masud Chowdhury received a 2017 Leadership Excellence Achievement Program (LEAP) Award from the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) Western Chapter for demonstrating mentoring abilities that encourage students to seek leadership excellence in the engineering profession.

Dr. Reza Derakhshani received $80,000 from EyeVerify to support his CIBIT Laboratory (Computational Intelligence and Bio-Identification Technologies Lab).

Dr. Zhu Li received $50,000 from Qualcomm Technologies to support his research in point cloud compression.

Dr. John Kevern received a $175,000 research grant from Iowa State University and the National Academies of Sciences to support his research in “Entrained Air Void System for Durable Highway Concrete”.

Nine senior design course student projects in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering secured external funding. Sponsors include: Honeywell FMT, Orbital ATK, and Ansera Analytics. Course instructors are Dr. Katherine Bloemker (ME) and Dr. Reza Derakhshani (EE).

Dr. ZhiQiang Chen was awarded $72,710 in seed funding from EPSCoR for his project entitled, “Development of Aerial-Ground Sensing and Data-enabled Vulnerability-Resilience Modeling for Crop Systems subject to Drought”.

Dr. Faisal Khan has received an $80,000 award from the Department of Energy for the project “Creation of an Adaptive Remaining Lifetime Prediction Model of Power Electronics.” This project is in collaboration with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

Samaa Gazzaz, computer science major at UMKC, won 3rd prize in the ACM Student Research Competition at the 2016 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. Samaa’s poster was based on work she completed as a UMKC SUROP mentee with her faculty mentor Dr. Praveen Rao. Her poster was entitled, “Harnessing Kansas City Open Data to Improve the Lives of Citizens”.

Katie Gonzagowski, senior Civil Engineering major at UMKC, received the Outstanding Collegiate Member (OCM) Award from the Society of Women Engineers for enthusiastically supporting K-12 STEM programs, for more closely connecting collegiate and professional sections, and for leveraging social media skills to heighten participation across the region.
