KC STEM Alliance

Who We Are

The KC STEM Alliance is an independent program housed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Computing and Engineering. Funding to support the Alliance comes from multi-year grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and from area STEM related companies, grants, and other non-profit agencies and organizations.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help increase the number of students who are prepared to enter STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers in Kansas City. Initially, the program will serve to consolidate local support for two existing organizations Project Lead the Way-Kansas City (PLTW-KC) and FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Eventually, the KC STEM Alliance will be an over-arching organization that leverages strengths, human resources and fiscal assets of other organizations with similar purpose.

Who We Serve

The KC STEM Alliance serves to connect schools to the STEM Community in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, by providing financial resources, technical assistance, research and data collection and convening.

Who Is Involved

The KC STEM Alliance has many educational and corporate partners on board from 24 school districts serving more than 15,000 students in the area to more than 75 area companies including: Burns & McDonnell, Black & Veatch, Cerner, Garmin, Custom Engineering, KCPL and Honeywell. We are also working with KC-Area Education Research Consortium (KC AERC), a consortium of the leading regional post-secondary research programs including University of Missouri Kansas City, University of Missouri, University of Kansas and Kansas State University to evaluate initiatives. In addition, a newly formed interim advisory board will help determine the organizational and governance structure.

How can you get involved?

An essential component of STEM programming is that schools work directly with a variety of professionals from STEM fields including engineering, engineering technology, advanced manufacturing and bio-medical/bio-sciences industries. There are multiple ways for a company to get involved including:

  • Sponsoring a FIRST Robotics or FIRST Lego League team
  • Hosting field trips both during the year and in summer camps
  • Serving on a school-based advisory committee
  • Mentoring a PLTW teacher or classroom
  • Serving on a regional advisory or planning committee
