The impact of computing has reached far and the future offers even greater promise. We cannot tell you what technologies you will be working on in four or five years, but we know that there will be exciting opportunities for you to help society move forward.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Computer Science Electrical Engineering (CSEE) is to provide competitive educational opportunities and focused research in the disciplines supported in the department to generate the professional and technical work force and research needed for economic development. To accomplish this mission, the department seeks to:

  • Perform research that advances our knowledge in these disciplines and their applications.
  • Educate and graduate students knowledgeable about these disciplines and who are able to learn and lead throughout their careers.
  • Engage in service and outreach to enrich the community, state, and profession.

In order to execute this mission, the department offers the degrees listed in the column below, and engages in nationally and internationally recognized research.

History

Although the Department of Computer Science Electrical Engineering (CSEE) and the School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) have been founded fairly recently (in 2003 and 2001 respectively), the disciplines of computer science, electrical engineering and information technology have rich history at UMKC. Programming courses were first offered in the early 1970s. The first computer science degree program was offered in the late 1970s, and it laid the foundation for the Computer Science Telecommunication Program (CSTP) in 1984 in UMKC as an independent administrative unit under the leadership of Richard Hetherington. It was charged with developing graduate and undergraduate degree programs in computer science with specialty area in telecommunication and with conducting nationally recognized research and development programs. The administration of the BA and the BS degrees was moved to CSTP, an MS in CS was developed in 1986, and the doctoral disciplines of Computer Science, Computer Networking and Telecommunications Networking were added in the early 1990s. A baccalaureate degree in information technology was added in 1999.

The University of Kansas City (now UMKC) offered a General Engineering degree in the 1950s and a master’s program in Electrical Engineering was started in 1964. In the early 1970s, the Coordinated Undergraduate Engineering Program (CUEP) started to offer an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, which the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET accredited in 1978. Under this arrangement, UMC operated a satellite campus in the Kansas City area, where students would take engineering courses from UMC faculty and would take general and supporting courses from UMKC, with the degree formally being awarded from UMC. The master's degree in EE was also moved to the CUEP, which would then be called CEP.

In 1999, UMKC completed the Robert H. Flarsheim Science and Technology Hall, and both Programs moved into this building, along with some natural sciences departments from the College of Liberal Arts. In 2001, the administration of the Coordinated Engineering Programs was transferred from the University of Missouri - Columbia to UMKC and combined with the Computer Science Telecommunication Program. Together, they formed the foundation of the School of Interdisciplinary Computing and Engineering. Dean William Osborne organized the school in departments in 2003 and requested successfully to drop the word ‘Interdisciplinary’ from the name.

The early years as a department were used to organize the nine degree programs and disciplines, and to strengthen the BS in Electrical Engineering, which as a reflection of this was renamed to the BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The computing degrees were also prepared for an initial accreditation request, and the visit coincided with the general review visit for the engineering degrees. The BS ECE program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, http://www.abet.org, and the BS CS and BS IT programs are accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET, http://www.abet.org. The ECE program has been accredited since 1978 and the CS and IT degrees have been accredited since 2007.

The Department of Computer Science Electrical Engineering (CSEE) is at the center of the science and technologies that improve the many ways in which people interact with each other and the world to create, collect, connect, network, manipulate, disseminate, and incorporate information.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Bachelor of Information Technology degrees are accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org and the Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. With this unique combination of Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering and Information Technology - the only such department in the U.S. - you can get the educational background needed for a successful career in these integrated and rapidly evolving fields. Furthermore, being located in the heart of Kansas City with its many corporations and industries, there is an abundance of professional internships and part-time job opportunities.

CSEE also offers Master of Science degrees in Computer Science and in Electrical Engineering, with course work that reflects foundational theories and exciting practical applications, as well as cutting edge expositions to emerging fields. Our doctoral program is the most intense degree program, allowing you to make a mark on the future of your own generation.

You will find that many of our faculty has national and international reputations for not only their research, but for several interesting projects as well. Among our faculty, we have a UMKC Curators' Professor, Faculty Fellow honorees, and Fulbright Senior Specialists. Much of their research and coursework are concentrated in the broad areas of Networking and (Tele) communications, Signal and Image processing, Software Engineering and Systems, Electromagnetics and Mixed Signals, Database and Information Management, VLSI and Embedded Systems, and Bioinformatics. Their excellent research records are supported by grants from government organizations as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), the National Institute of Health (NIH) and from various industries.

Graduates of our degree programs build successful careers. They have joined small and large companies, or started their own, and some can be found in the board- rooms of Fortune 100 companies.

Perhaps the most famous computer scientist from UMKC is Juris Hartmanis, who graduated in 1951 with an M.S. degree in Applied Math ('51). He established the foundations of computational complexity theory and established one of the first CS departments in the world at Cornell University. For his contributions, he shared the 1993 ACM Turing Award (often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing”) and UMKC honored him with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 1999.
