June 16 What it Takes to be an Effective Leader
This introductory module of the program will invite participants to explore key principles of effective leadership, share a brief history of leadership, discuss research on the behaviors and practices of effective leaders, and provide an opportunity for participants to complete a self-assessment to assess their own practice of leadership. After attending this session, participants will better be able to:
- identify what it takes to lead effectively in organizations and in communities.
- distinguish the difference between leadership and management, and how each contributes to organizational success.
- explain the implications of their own capacity to lead effectively.
July 7 Leading Teams and Groups
Whether it is in business, government, or public service, a good share of the most important and influential work that gets done is accomplished (and can only be accomplished) through the groups and teams – people working together to accomplish results. In this environment, leadership takes on a new meaning and significance. In this session we will explore the differences between groups and teams, examine the implications of group dynamics for team success, and share what we have learned about how effective leaders bring people together to accomplish exceptional results through teamwork. After attending this session, participants will better be able to:
- identify what it takes to effectively organize and lead teams.
- describe the key elements of group dynamics and how they affect the success of teams.
- explain how their own approach to leadership is likely to impact team success.
July 28 Understanding and Dealing Effectively with Conflict
Conflict is among the most challenging and misunderstood of dynamics that occur when people come together. Too often, conflict is treated as negative condition that is to be avoided at all costs. And yet, constructive conflict can be a valuable source of insight, creativity, energy and growth for a community and group. This session offers participants an opportunity to see conflict from multiple perspectives, understand how to manage conflict to achieve positive outcomes, assess their own style for handling conflict, and gain perspective on how their style may be both helpful and problematic. After attending this session, participants will better be able to:
- identify the key elements of conflict and the conflict cycle, and how to shape conflict to achieve positive outcomes.
- distinguish the differences between constructive and destructive conflict, and how leadership will play a pivotal role in managing common conflicts.
- summarize how their own style and approach to conflict will influence their success in dealing with conflict.
August 11 Leading People through Change
It is said so often! Change is the only constant! We know change is natural and inevitable, yet so often we find it troubling and difficult. It’s certainly not easy! Yet, successful leaders are those who are able to lead people in times of significant change. They employ the forces and dynamics of change to build their communities and organizations, and they are effective in helping others understand and make their way through change. This session offers insights into the dynamics of change, how different people perceive and cope with significant change, and what it takes to be successful as a change leader. After attending this session, participants will better be able to:
- identify the components that are central to successfully leading a change initiative.
- describe the key phases of a major change process and how they affect people.
- determine how to successfully support people as they transition through the challenge of change.
August 18 Managing Up
There are hundreds of models, theories, and guides that have been created to tell us how to be effective and successful leaders. Many offer useful guidance and at least a little insight. But what about leading from the middle? What does it take to effectively lead in ways that influence those who are your supervisors and others in higher-level leadership and management roles? In this interactive session, we will discuss findings from the latest research about influence and what we have learned about what it takes to lead and manage “up.” After attending this session, participants will better be able to:
- explain what research tells us is essential to successfully “leading up”.
- recognize the importance of emotional intelligence in leading others.
- describe how to gain and exercise influence when you have no formal authority.
The Leadership Development Series of the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering is facilitated by Dr. David Renz, director of the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership, the leadership research and development center of the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.
